Monogram and Personalized

One of my many pastimes is putting a name on it.  I love monograms and bows. I love the extra touches of personalization.  I decided to venture out with an online store.  I want to share some of the designs I am using this spring.   The bunnies were a hit and with  summer is nearly here, the hibiscus decals are the rage.  There is a new item called LIFE theme and it is used on tee shirts and totes.  I am just learning how to create these designs.

Relaxed Dinner Party for Eight

Image 4

French Country Picnic 2

It’s time for an Italian dinner party. I purchased some new wines for taste testing and I found on Pinterest the copycat recipe of Carrabba’s dipping oil. All that’s left is my son’s guaranteed-for-delicious spaghetti sauce recipe and add the finishing touches to the menu. I love dinner parties and will use any excuse for friends to stop by. Today I liked to share a few tips I use to create a fun dinner party.

What makes a great dinner party? Besides food, wine, and friends, what are the easiest ways to set a dinner party atmosphere? Well, here are my own top tips for creating the dinner party atmosphere. They are all really simple .

Before, I give you my tips, there is one important thing and it is the most important. To invite friends who are your friends and who you enjoy around your table. Whether you are serving a simple dish , grilling or several courses, your guests are here to spend time with you. This feeling comes from the heart and a relaxed and hospitable party begins it. The spirit of the hostess carries the party.

My favorite time of the day for a party to begin is dusk. Whether you are serving the meal from your deck , back porch or dining area, as evening sets in, people tend to relax and are ready to enjoy cocktails and conversation.

Midsummer Night

My first tip is to turn down the lights. It is the easiest thing to do and sets a tone of peacefulness.   Secondly, I light candles. You can purchase tea lights and place them in clear glass containers. Candles add movement and warmth to a table. They don’t have to be an expensive habit. I own the Luminara Real-Frame Effect candles that operate with a rechargeable battery. The flame appears so real. I never have to worry about fire, plus honestly, in the long run, they are less expensive than real candles.

Another tip is use fabric napkins. People enjoy the feel of fabric and they add a gracious touch to the table. They don’t have to be expensive. In fact, you can make your own .

Be sure to bring the outdoors inside. It doesn’t have to be lavish, like a florist centerpiece. Whatever is growing in your yard, can be placed near the candles or even spread a little greenery and flowers throughout the serving dishes.

Always  have water and water glasses on the water and remember the salt and pepper. I add pitcher of water at each end of the table and several sets of salt and pepper.

Last but certainly not least, don’t forget the music. My pastime is dance and most of all my friends are dancers. So naturally, we love our music. I use Pandora and have preselected stations that play our favorite tunes. I set it on shuffle and it is like we have our own DJ in the booth.

By the time, we have finished our meal, we are usually ready for another cocktail and enjoy dancing and learning new steps from each other on the deck.  We take the party outside , by the tabletop firepit  and  enjoy as the night moves in.

Pinecone Zinnias

Image 31 E1458682952865

My pinecones are still falling. Im ready for summer and summer flowers. So until my zinnias bloom, Ill do the next best thing.  Create pretty zinnias from pinecones.  I use pinecones in many of my rustic, fall and country designs.  I like their textured feel and look and they add dimension to a design.    I am always researching new ways of design and I came across an article on creating zinnias from pinecones.   What a fun idea.  I decided to give it a try.  How easy they are to create.

What you will need  :

Sponge Brush, Paints, mod podge acrylic sealant, and pinecones.

Any type of pine cone will work. Just be sure the bottom of it turned upwards resembles a flower.  You can use different sizes of pinecones  as you are creating  “a bouquet” .

Once you gather your pinecones, Dry brush them to clean any pine straw and dirt off .

Some  use spray paint to color the pinecones.   I tried it , but found that it  spattered and was a little messy.   So I opted for the acrylic craft paint and a sponge brush. It gives me more control of getting into the cracks and layers of the pinecone.

I let the paint set for about  a minute on the pinecone and then I dry brushed it for an outdoorsy and natural look.

I dabbed a little yellow paint  in the center to create the pollen part of the zinnia.  Don’t be afraid to layer different colors and layer shades for depth.

Pine cone Zinnias

The  paint will be dry to the touch in about an hour, but I wanted to be sure it was completely dry in all the nooks and crannies.  I waited until morning for the next step.  I sealed them with the modpodge sealant.  Let them dry and you are ready to arrange them in a  beautiful bowl . They make a great accent piece. I love the colors they add to a room  Be creative. You can  use them to make a wreath or string them as a garland.  Here is a link to a step by step tutorial on creating  pinecone zinnias .

DIY Table Lights

Image E1460046603354

I love this time of year and at the end of a day, I really don’t want to go inside. The weather is cool but still enjoyable. Watching the sunset and the sky changing colors gives me such a restful feeling. I love my tabletop fire pit.  It adds just enough heat to keep me cozy. I found another great DIY outside project that takes only a hour to create and by night fall, I can enjoy the results with my tabletop fire pit.

It is inexpensive too. I bought Dollar Tree solar lights and  flower pots . I already had the paints. Since I’m not crafty as an artist, I just pour a small amount of paint on the flower pots.  Let them dry. Insert your lights and you are all set with perfect little table lights.

Now all I add is a glass of wine, toes up and watch the sunset.

Bedroom Sanctuary

Image 13

Have you ever spent a night at a motel or hotel and found it was a restful night? You actually felt more rested than if you were in your own bedroom.   If you have, then it is time for a bedroom revamp. First notice what was it about the motel room that made it more restful. You will want to reinvent this mood in your own bedroom.

I love a cozy bedroom. I love lots of pillows, Egyptian  sheets and fluffy coverlets. I love subdued lighting and a touch of white noise to block out the world. And I love a healthy bedroom.

love a cozy bedroom. I love lots of pillows, Egyptian  sheets and fluffy coverlets. I love subdued lighting and a touch of white noise to block out the world. And I love a healthy bedroom.
What is a healthy bedroom? It is when you walk into the room and it feels and smells fresh. Here are ways to keep your bedroom healthy and cozy.

Replace your mattress every 5 to 7 years. Quality counts. Choose the best quality you can afford. You want your spine to be properly aligned. And the size of the mattress matters. A bed too small is a big mistake. You need to be able to stretch out and feel free in bed. Use high quality thread count linens. They breathe easily and feel cool to be skin.

Stay away from the memory form pillows. They often emit dangerous Volotile Organic Compounds or VOC’s that can cause headaches, nausea, and eye irritation. You don’t want your face, mouth, or nose anywhere near them. Use instead pillows filled with organic materials, like wool or feathers, or at least safer foam like natural latex foam.

A quiet air filterer is an efficient way to purify your bedroom of dangerous pollutants and agitating allergens like dust mites, pollen, and pet dander. It also can be used for white noise to block out sporadic noises.

My favorite thing is to have house plants in my bedroom. Not only will a potted plant or two beautify your bedroom, but they will also release oxygen and help filter out harmful compounds emitted by everyday cleaners, detergents, and fragrances. They are several houseplants that thrive in low light and are perfect in a bedroom.

The décor of your bedroom needs to invoke peacefulness to yourself when you enter the room. We all have that special color hue that we gravitate to for restfulness. Use this palette for your wall and accents. I love the colors of beiges and blues in my bedroom.

I personally don’t have a TV in my bedroom. It detracts me and I can not relax with its chatter. I prefer to be quiet and mediate before sleeping. Ease your anxious mind. Wind down before bed. Take a bath, meditate, or do whatever it takes to relax and wipe away the day’s stress.  I like an oversize chair with a rug underneath to sit in before retiring to bed. A soft light with low wattage sits on a side table beside the stair. I can read or use my ipad and enjoy some evening tea or milk. This helps me wind down for bedtime. Your bed should never be a desk, dining room table or a couch. A radio or sound system of soft music playing the background while reading tends to relax the body, but before I get into bed, I turned it off.

Always, always have scented oils or candles in your bedroom. Lavender and lemongrass are two of my favorites in the bedroom. Another scent is peony and rose. Studies show the sense of smell of calming aromas helps to reduce your stress levels.

I read a study on sleep patterns and what helps in sleep. I was surprised it suggested having a dark red night light. If you wake during the night, this color doesn’t cause you to feel wide awake. It gives a glow of contentment and helps you fall back to sleep. I use a red glow infuser in my bedroom. It cast its glow as well as the smell of lavender fills the room.

I find that keeping it simple in décor is best. If a picture of a sunset makes you feel rested, hang one in your room. I personally like water scenes and flowers. So my room has cottage cozy written on it. Keep it clean and simple. Remember to keep your sleep environment uncluttered, dark, quiet and cool.

For the best sleep, avoid exercising or eating near bedtime. Eliminate alcohol and nicotine intake, especially before sleeping. And treat your body right during the day. Eating right and exercise during the day. Bedtime is the body’s time to rejuvenate for another day.

Take it day by day. Changing your schedule and attitude about sleep isn’t going to happen overnight. It requires lifestyle changes, dedication and practice. Just like improving any aspects of our lives, making sleep a priority takes time.

Remember your bedroom is your getaway room. It is like that motel/hotel away from home. Close the door and unwind and call it a day.

Easter Dinner

Image 15 E1458609963772

imageEaster, which celebrates Jesus Christ’s resurrection from the dead, is Christianity’s most important holiday. It has been called a moveable feast because it doesn’t fall on a set date every year, as most holidays do. Instead, Christian churches in the West celebrate Easter on the first Sunday following the full moon after the vernal equinox on March 21. Therefore, Easter is observed anywhere between March 22 and April 25 every year.

My Easter morning begin with Hot Cross Buns and Hot coffee. I wake at 4 am. Sunrise services at church begin soon. I love making this service. Seeing the sun rise gives me the reassurance that Jesus Christ  indeed was raised from death . How fitting to see “The Son ” rise on Easter morning. After this service, I chat with fellow Christians , glad to have this day to give pause and reflection to our faith.  We will be back in a couple of hours for worship service and afterwards, many of us have guests arriving for dinner to celebrate the day.  Our Christian friends who don’t have family nearby are invited to our homes. Our church family is close and we make sure  all can celebrate with friends on this special day. My traditional Easter Dinner begins with a Honey Basted Ham.   Most of my dinner menu can be prepared the day before, so my Easter Day can be enjoyed with family and friends. When family arrives, they always have a side dish. Our table soon becomes a feast fit for a king.  The children have their annual Easter Egg Hunt  in the back yard and hurry in with their baskets full of eggs to count,  to see who wins the big prize chocolate bunny. No one goes home empty handed. They are miniature bunnies for anyone who looked for eggs. Enjoying family and friends at Easter makes such a  special day. We gather around the table, hold hands and give God the Glory for his Beloved Son who is our Lord and Savior.  Wishing you all a very Blest and  Christlike Easter.

Easter eggs

Imagine a room filled with 55,000 chocolate Easter Eggs wrapped in purple foil all ready for delivery.   The smell of peanut butter and cream cheese together with melted chocolate . That is what you will find at the Kernersville First Presbysterian Church each Easter season.  Volunteers from the church begin the Lenten season hand dipping chocolate Easter eggs.  This is an annual fundraiser for the church and the monies from the 45 cent eggs have offered financial support to various charities  in their community.  In 2015 they  provided support to:  Kernersville Police Department’s Camp for Kids, Kernersville Fire Department’s Safety Seat Program, Crisis Control, Next Step Ministries Battered Women’s Shelter, Kernersville Local Schools Gift Cards for Student Needs, and Kernersville Library for Children’s Books.  The Egg Ministry also  provides support for First Presbyterian’s Scholarship Fund and Youth Mission activities.

Church ministries throughout North Carolina have their Easter egg hunts and Chocolate ministries, but Kernersville Presbysterian  is known statewide.  The orders for eggs begin in January, from people from all over the state.  You can even order them online and have them shipped. Their recipe is a secret.   I have tried several chocolate Easter egg recipes through the years and I have my own favorite. It has the added ingredient of cream cheese combined with the chocolate that makes the inside so creamy and light. So if you are not able to order your eggs in time from the local church, try this recipe at home.  Personalized it with your special love one’s names.  They are delicious and they won’t last long.

Chocolate Peanut Butter Easter Eggs

Ingredients
  1. 1cup creamy peanut butter
  2. 4oz cream cheese
  3. 1cup powdered sugar
  4. 1tsp vanilla
  5. 1oz Ghirardelli® Dark Melting Wafers
  6. 4oz Ghirardelli® White Melting Wafers (optional, for decoration)
  7. food coloring (optional, for decoration)
Instructions
  1. Line a baking sheet or tray with waxed paper. In a large microwave-safe bowl, combine peanut butter and cream cheese. Microwave, uncovered, on high (100% power) for 30 seconds or until mixture is slightly softened, stirring once. Stir in powdered sugar. Shape the peanut butter mixture into egg shaped ovals using an egg shaped tablespoon. Place balls on the prepared baking sheet. Cover and freeze for 15 minutes or until firm.
  2. Place Ghirardelli® Dark Melting Wafers in a microwave-safe container. Microwave at half power or defrost setting for 30 seconds. Stir thoroughly (product keeps its original shape until stirred). If not completely melted, continue to microwave at 15 second intervals and stir until smooth. Overheating will cause wafers to burn.
  3. Using a fork, dip eggs into melted mixture, allowing excess to drip back into bowl. Place dipped eggs back on baking sheet. Chill for 30 minutes or until firm.
  4. For decoration, melt Ghirardelli® White Candy Making wafers in a microwave safe container (follow directions above). Pour into piping bag and decorate as desired. Food coloring can be added to wafers to make Easter colors.
  5. This recipe can also be reversed, using the White Candy Making Wafers for the Eggs and the Dark Wafers for decoration

Carolina Coleslaw

North Carolina is known for its barbeque.  We love it so much we even have an app where to find the best bbq.   And you can’t eat it alone.  Carolina is known for its many different recipes of coleslaw.  There is creamy slaw, Asian slaw, milk slaw, vinegar slaw.  I have tried them all and my favorite is just too simple to make. You don’t have to pull out the handy grater or marinate it overnight.  It is another Sandra Lee moment.  My mother would call me out on it. But I swear by this recipe and know once you try it, you will put it in your recipe book.

And thinking of the handy grater. I realized   gone are days of the hand grater.  We all have one still in our pantry. And it is way in the back. With blenders and choppers, the handy grater doesn’t get the appreciation it once did.    My grater was a gift when we married and I would never part with it. So instead of it hanging alone in the back of the pantry, I decided to dress it up and display it  in the kitchen.  It got so many compliments, I bought several , YES, I bought several, to decorate for gifts.  You never know what and when you are inspired by something.  The handy grater is now back in demand in a new way.

Fold the napkin in half and then in half again, forming a long rectangle.

Fold the right and left sides down to meet in the center, forming a point at the top.

Fold the bottom corners up, also meeting at the center.

Fold in the side corners so that they meet in a point. Your napkin should now be in a kite-like shape.

Very gently turn the napkin over and fold the top point downward.

Gently turn the napkin back over.

Roll the right side of the napkin over, a bit past the center point.
Fold the left side over and tuck it into the pocket on the right side.

Stand your napkin bunny upright. You may need to adjust the bottom to form a base.
Fluff the bunny ears and position the napkin on your plate.

There you have it. Cutest little bunny ears ever.     Happy Easter !

On the Go Travel Games

Image 41 E1456449737850

imageTraveling long distances alone is fun. The phone is off. You have your own music or book playing. You take the back roads to your destination. You stop along the way at a local diner and have their special for lunch.  And they will always have sweet tea and chocolate pie on the menu. It may take twice as long to arrive, but you actually feel rested from your drive.

When you are traveling with kids and some adults, it can become tiresome to those backseat drivers.  I learned along time ago to keep an ample supply of games on the go. The internet and iPhone are slowly taking over the backseat, but every once and while, the backseaters just want to enjoy the ride and play a travel on the go game.  The all time favorite is travel bingo.  I picked two sets up at the local Cracker Barrel. One set is for the rural roads and the other set is aimed for interstate roads.  They are a lot of fun and we even have made bets on who was buying dinner on the loser.  The interstate and rural bingo  can be found here

Another fun on the go game is Uno. This game can go on for quite some time.  You made have to pick up where you left off when you stop for lunch. There is also a lot of deciding who gets the next draw.  You can find it here.

My favorite is hangman. I can’t actually play because I am usually driving, but I can’t help myself in wanting to spell the words.

Of course the favorite of the guys is battleship. The back seat gets rather loud with this game. I just turn up my music . That works every time.  The best part of the trip is family and friends are enjoying the ride .

Carolina Girl from Smithfield

Image 4 E1456875904384

Ava gardner

There is a song about Carolina Girls.  My husband said he heard it long before arriving in Carolina. When you are born and raised in Carolina, you grew up hearing the song by General Johnson. It goes like this.  Carolina Girls, best in the world.

CAROLINA GIRLS
YOU’RE SO FINE GIRL, YOU’RE ONE OF A KIND SWEET CAROLINA GIRLS

CAROLINA GIRLS ,SWEET SOUTHERN PEARLS
YOU’RE SURE ENOUGH TUFF GIRL, I CAN’T GET ENOUGH OF SWEET CAROLINA GIRLS

I LOVE THE WAY YOU WALK. I LOVE THE WAY YOU TALK. YOU’RE SO FINE GIRL, YOU’RE ONE OF A KIND SWEET CAROLINA GIRLS

CALIFORNIA GIRLS ARE s  Y AND NEW YORK GIRLS ARE TOO
BUT CAROLINA GIRLS GOT GOOD LOOKS AND SWEET PERSONALITY TOO

CAROLINA GIRLS ,SWEET SOUTHERN PEARLS
YOU’RE SO FINE GIRL, YOU’RE ONE OF A KIND SWEET CAROLINA GIRLS , Sweet Carolina Girls

And a Carolina Girl is all that.  If you happen to be traveling through Carolina, you want to visit Smithfield NC.  Not only is it  the home of great  BBQ and a new  brewery, but it is the birthplace of Ava Lavinia Gardner.  If you are 50 and older reading this post, you know Ava Gardner. If not, her story is a larger than life story. She was born in Grabtown NC, about eight miles from Smithfield. Grabtown  is just a crossroads in Carolina. She grew up Baptist and family oriented. Her family owned a sawmill and a farm.

In the summer of 1940, Ava was allowed to visit her married sister Beatrice in New York City, and the trip altered her life. Struck by his sister-in-law’s unspoiled beauty, Beatrice’s husband, commercial photographer Larry Tarr, persuaded her to pose for a series of portraits. After he placed one shot in the window of his studio, it was spotted by a messenger from MGM who presented himself as a talent scout. Tarr saw through the ruse, but he eventually sent another group of photos to the talent office at Metro.   Her life soon  belonged to the movies and MGM.  Her story of Carolina Girl to the most beautiful woman of that time has been told and written many times over.  While her career took her all over the world and she lived away in Europe for 30 plus years, her roots remained in North Carolina. Her wish was to be laid to rest in her hometown at death and the ceremony be private.  In keeping her legacy alive, a museum dedicated to her was established in Smithfield, NC.

When you visit in Smithfield, be sure to stop by the Double Barley Brewing also.  It is a great tap room and before leaving grab a plate of bbq and slaw.  Don’t forget the homemade chocolate pie.  “It hits the spot.”

1812 on the Perquimans

Image 2 E1456794349857

Perquimans County of North Carolina.  Its Indian meaning  is “ Land of the Beautiful Women.”  It is nestled  on the coast of North Carolina surrounded by the Albemarle Sound with Yeopim , Little River and Perquimans River snaking their way between the fingers of land.  It has over 100 miles of shoreline. It is tranquil,  quiet and serene.

Along the Perquimans River on Old Neck Road, you will find a home that holds many hospitable memories and still is active as a Bed and Breakfast. It is the 1812 on the Perquimans. This beautiful two story home had been in the Rascoe family over 200 years. It was known as the Fletcher-Skinner-Nixon House.  In the early 1990’s, the mother of Peter Rascoe asked him would he save it. Peter and his wife, Nancy, were up for the challenge. In fact, they did most of the restorations.  Ms. Nancy, as I like to call her, was a teacher, but had stopped working outside the home to help her husband with the restorations.   However the part of Ms. Nancy that loves to share, inform and teach never left her .   She loved the home and she wanted others to see it’s beauty and an idea blossomed. A cousin suggested to Ms. Nancy to offer an etiquette camp for children.  She thought, “what if the children came and had a party as Gone with the Wind? She could teach etiquette , making it a fun experience. She would add swimming, canoeing, tennis and croquet.

The first etiquette class was in 1993. It was a handful of girls. Ms. Nancy led the classes and sports. Her husband, known as, Big Peter, cooked. A friend taught the Bible study and Miss Blue, the sweetest , most charming lady of the area, helped at the inn, cleaned and played the piano. The Racsoes were in their sixties  and they loved the young energy in the home.

1812

My thoughts of Ms. Nancy consist of her genuine fondness of others.  She has a keen sense of humor  and her sincerity shines.  Anyone who knows Ms. Nancy  soon appreciates her outlook as a Southern Lady and her Nancy-isms stay with you long after you depart from 1812.   Some of her sayin’s are on folding a towel… “Inside to inside, flip over and don’t let the tag show.” On how to say “washrag”… It is a bath cloth.  On how to say trashcan…. It is a wastebasket.  On eating soup the proper way…”Out to Sea and back to me.”  And how to shake a hand … “No wobbly fish”.

1812 on the Perquimans is still active. Much has happened since 1993. Big Peter and Ms.Blue have passed .  A nanny that visited along with one of the girls years ago is now with Ms. Nancy . Ms. Sitterson and others help Ms. Nancy in keeping the school active.  Ms. Nancy is still teaching and sayings her Nancy-isms.  The children leave with knowing how to place a napkin, set a formal table, play tennis, have devotional , all in the setting of a Gone with the Wind home.

And before the children leave they know this quote…. Etiquette is today what it has always been. A code of behavior based on kindness, consideration and unselfishness. Something that should not and will ever change.

Perquimans

If you happen to ride through on Hwy 17 in North Carolina, reserve a night’s stay at the 1812 on the Perquimans. The reviews are all 5 star and you will enjoy the experience of true Southern Elegance.

Queen Sugar

imageWho doesn’t love a great Southern read ?   Our Southern culture offers stories of tall tales to romantic spins and mysteries unsolved.  If you’re from the South, the fictional characters of any southern book seem familiar . You either have an uncle, cousin or  close family member that resembles the story being told. Stories of southern families  resonates with you because you have lived the story. How many times have you heard your Mother say, I could write a book.   Yep, in the South , we do love our manners and airing dirty laundry is not allowed. It’s just not Southern.

Recently  I read that Oprah’s Harpo Productions had purchased the screen rights to the book  “Queen Sugar.” Filming has already begun and it will be airing on OWN as a series.  I am looking forward to seeing how they will bring this book alive.

Queen Sugar by  Natalie Baszile took eleven years to write. This storyline developed over time as she visited the South. Her depiction of Louisiana’s Sugar Mills takes you back into where we were and how the South grew.

The story begins  when a daughter inherits a sugarcane farm in Louisiana of 800 areas.

Charley and her daughter arrive from California in time for the summer growing season but nothing could have prepared her for what she was getting into.  Her judgmental but big-hearted grandmother tells her, cane farming is always going to be a white man’s business and she, as a black woman from the South, will not be able to compete.   The summer begins and Charley must balance the  challenges of her farm and the family dynamics of a homesick daughter and her troubled brother and  showing the Southern farmers she can compete and make a profit in the sugarcane business.

It is a great story of the South and its culture.  You can download it from Amazon on Kindle.

Watch for the upcoming opening of the series on OWN.

Transferware Florals

Image 45 E1456406164341

TransferwareTransferware and flowers. I love the combination. Nothing speaks as elegant as redwedge and roses.  Transferware has been used in Southern homes since the big plantations of 1800’s.  It is a carry over from England.  The transfer-printing technique, was developed in England in the eighteenth century .The process permits the application of a printed decoration, using copper plates and tissues onto pottery, china, chintz. English transferware became  extremely popular in the United States ,  a fact that British potters embraced. A number of the major tableware firms produced goods exclusively for the American market.  Specific colors, in particular pink and dark blue were exclusively produced for export to America. Even today  a small area in the north of Stafford County, England, remains the pottery capital of the world.

Cottage floral in a purple transferware sugar bowl. The only thing better than purple is more purple.

Silks make a nice display in transferware. There are many high quality silks available that at first glance seem to be fresh flowers. This piece is available at Bequiled Again.

Pink tulips & red transferwear!:

This simple and elegant arrangement was uploaded  from Pinterest.

When designing in transferware, you are thinking one large bloom in the center as a focal point. Then build around it with smaller blooms. Greens or foliage is placed in between for the eyes to rest, accenting the blooms contrast.  The foliage also supports the back and sides of an arrangement. A container or vase should be chosen in proportion to the flowers. Put big, showy peonies in a big vase, and delicate lily-of-the-valley in a dainty, old-fashioned crystal or china vase. Is your floral arrangement going to be sitting against a high wall  or will be seen from all sides ?  Think about where the arrangement will be displayed.

Transferware adds a touch of softness to any area it is displayed.

As much as I enjoy arranging flowers, I  love even more the smiles when I give the arrangements away.  I’ve enjoyed giving bouquets to my elderly friend who lives in a nearby nursing home, a birthday bouquet to a friend who moved to an condo and no longer has a garden of her own, and the surprised happiness when giving a design to employees of a local hospital.

I love fresh flowers. You can achieve your own cutting garden, if you’re gardening space is limited. Plant pots full of peonies and hydrangea. They make beautiful accents to any outdoor patio or apartment balcony. Peonies and Hydrangea have multiple blooms and will give you several bouquets through the summer.

My cutting garden has mostly pink, purple and white, because I like those colors. I plant a few annuals in our front garden bed, to fill in the gaps around the perennials, so some years we also have shades of soft yellow from the perennials.

You also need greens in a cutting garden. Plant varieties of hosta and  ferns. They  grow easily along the shady side of a house. Hosta comes in a variety of shades of green, from a blue-gray to a brilliant lime green, to striped, and it’s fun to combine the right shade of hosta to complement the flowers in a bouquet. I love the gray-green hosta leaves against our palest pink flowers, while the lime green hosta leaves look gorgeous with dark purple lavender. And hosta is hardy. In North Carolina, wax myrtle is indegious to the area and it lemon scent and hardy wood added to the design gives a deeper texture of blends.

Pick  plants you love. That sounds obvious, but there are fads in garden plants just as there are in everything else. If you like a plant , plant it , nourish it and bring it inside. It is your garden.  Enjoy the rewards and show off your beautiful transferware bouquet.

Living by Logic

Image 46

Micah 6:8Living by logic. As an adult, we have decisions to make.Daily you hear the media, politicians, leaders, social media everydayers, voiced their demands and opinions upon others .

As we say in the South, everybody has one, an opinion. Some more loudly and obnoxious than the other. Some never saying their opinions, they just live their opinions.  Why does someone have a certain opinion? What drew them to that opinion?  Logic.

In Genesis, it is noted two accounts of creation. And in reading the two accounts , you see opposing sides of mankind’s nature. We see Adam as ambitious . He wants to build, create, produce and discover things. Second creation story shows Adam wanting to have a serene inner character, He is solid in seeing right and wrong. He not only wants to do good, but he wants to be good.   One wants to conquer the earthly world, the other wants to obey the calling to serve in this earthly world.  The two Adams approach their being  in different ways.  What brings them to be in conflict?  Logic.

One is living utilitarian logic and the other by inverse logic. Utilitarian logic  is the logic of economics. Input leads to output. Pursue self-interest. Impress the world.   Inverse logic is a moral logic, you have to give to receive. In order to fulfill yourself, you have to forget yourself. In order to grow your strengths, you confront your weaknesses.  Can the two be reconciled?

Have you ever come met someone who possessed an impressive inner cohesiveness?  They don’t live fragmented, scattered lives. They are calm, settled and rooted.  You may not even notice this person at first,  since you are busy in voicing your opinions and shoutouts. Your opinion demands attention. But when you really notice this person, you see they are kind and cheerful and also reserved. They possess the virtues of humility, restraint, respect and self-discipline. They are dignified when others try to humiliate them. They are restrained when other try to provoke them. But they get things done. You never hear them boast, the nature of self-righteous eludes them.  They seem Christ like.

Someone who has an inner cohesive life doesn’t always live with a conflict-free tranquility. They have the moments others have.  What they recognize is that the first Adam of their being needs to be reconciled with the second.  They achieved their success by surrendering to the struggle to deepen the soul. They found the balance . Their character is formed.

Beautiful Bulbs for Spring

Image 42 E1456240775102

purple shamrock: Flower Oxalis triangularis , Purple shamrock imageThe purple-leaf shamrock is a low-growing foliage plant for the garden that also makes an attractive indoor plant with its rich, vibrant, purple leaves.  The dark colors blend well and accent the colors of spring flowers. The touch of dark lavender among the bright yellows and whites and blues make a soft contrast in spring floral arrangements. To jumpstart the growth of the shamrock in the spring, you need to start in January.

Fill three-quarters of the container with potting mix. Set the bulbs (as many as the container will hold) on top, then scoop in more potting mix, to about an inch from the rim. Wet the bulbs with tepid water, then don’t water again until you see growth, in about three weeks. In about eight weeks, you will see blooms. Purple shamrock will grow indoors year-round if you give it three or more hours of sunlight a day and water when it’s dry to the touch. You can replant outside after using the purple shamrock as a spring arrangement. Take the bulbs and plant  outside in April. Outside, purple shamrocks should be planted  areas that are somewhat shaded.  They need to be in the front of the bed to be seen, or they could be in a container that needs season-long color as they are low growing plants. When the weather is warm and there is adequate moisture, the shamrock blooms with small, pale pink, bell-like flowers. By fall, they will have multiplied themselves. Now, it’s time for the big decision.  They can be dug and put into a pot and play the role of an indoor plant during the winter, or it is possible to store them like other summer bulbs in a dormant state and reactivate them in the spring. Because they multiply, you are able to do both.  You can use them year round in the foyer centerpiece and also store bulbs for using in your forced bulbs arrangements for your spring tablescapes.

If the bulbs are going to be stored for the winter, dig chunks of roots and bulbs and gently remove as much soil as possible without having the chunks of tightly packed bulbs break apart. Place into a cardboard box or paper bags and bring into the house until the foliage dies down and dries up. Store the clumps of bulbs in a container like a cardboard box or paper bag and nestle them into a bed of dry sphagnum peat moss. The peat is acidic and it prevents any rots if they should start.  Cool and dark conditions keep them dormant. Please don’t allow to freeze.

Mixed along with strong colors of greens and white, they make a beautiful contrast.

Most bulbs need a dormant period to bloom in spring.  If you didn’t think to save your bulbs and give them a rest, you still have can have forced bulbs in the spring.  Purchase your bulb plants from any garden center in early spring.  I use already growing daffodils, hyacinths and tulips.

Forcing bulbs

I use a white transferware piece bowl and put a small amount of soil inside. Break the bulbs apart and gently arrange in your container. Once I have arranged my flowers, I had another thin layer of soil, just to secure them . I add reindeer moss as an added appeal. You can also use Spanish moss. Be sure not to overwater as it will rot the bulbs. Just keep the soil slightly moist.

Sounds of Spring

Sounds of Spring

Just before the sunrise and the sky is changing from dark to light, you can head the sounds of spring coming. The songs of the Carolina Birds. North Carolina has over 100 species of birds that call it home. During the winter , you see the birds at their feeders, but they don’t stay too long and head back to the brush and grass and wax myrtle . Sometimes when it warms up a bit, you will find them together on the feeders. But mostly they fly in to feed quickly.

During the winter months, I keep an ample supply of bird seeds thrown under the bushes and trees. I rolled the pinecones in peanut butter and cut of slices of apples and oranges and sunflower seeds and scatter them through the trees .

And now Spring is filling the air. Early in the mornings, you can hear them sing. The little Carolina Wren is a favorite. They are such a curious bird and will stay close ,even when you are moving. They want to see what you are doing.Carolina%20wren%20durham%20120808

The American goldfinches are a bit flighty. They perch in the wax myrtles and eat the berries, but try as I might, I can’t get too close. They only come back when they think the coast is clear.

The State Bird of North Carolina is the cardinal. They travel as a couple. Beautiful birds. They feed when the light is dim.

The Bluebird is a favorite. They love their babies. Both mom and dad bluebirds work feverishly to build their nest. The male bluebird stays perch high to watch and calls out to the female bluebird as she finds food and carries it back to the babies.

Many others visit . Mourning Doves, CatBirds, Jaybirds, Robins, Titmice and the adorable Bobwhites . You see woodpeckers in the hardwoods. Mockingbirds swooping in. Martins looks for a gourd home. The cute warblers singing back and forth to each other. There is usually a hawk flying overhead and the crane come in to visit at the ponds. The nightime owl hoots at dusk.  Spring mornings are such a delight listening to the birds thanking God for another day.
