There is something about blue and white at Christmas that feels both fresh and timeless.
While I love traditional Christmas reds and greens, I have always been drawn to chinoiserie—the beautiful blues, crisp whites, ginger jars, bows, and classic patterns that can stay in your home long after the holidays are over.
That inspiration became my Chinoiserie Christmas Tree Needlepoint Canvas, and it has become one of my favorite designs—and one of BeeBee Designs’ best sellers.
A Christmas Tree with Chinoiserie Style
This little tree, click to see , combines traditional Christmas greenery with the blue-and-white palette I love so much.
The design features a Christmas tree filled with blue and white ornaments, topped with a beautiful blue bow and planted in a classic blue planter. A delicate blue border with chinoiserie-inspired corner details finishes the design.
The canvas measures 4 × 5 inches on 14-count needlepoint mesh, making it a wonderfully manageable project without sacrificing the little details that make it special.
And here’s one of my favorite parts: I leave the white background unstitched.
The open canvas keeps the finished piece light and crisp and allows the rich greens and blues to really stand out.
My Favorite Detail: Variegated Green
For the tree branches, I especially love using a variegated green thread.
Instead of stitching the entire tree in one solid green, the changing shades create natural highlights and shadows as you stitch. It gives the branches more depth without requiring complicated stitch changes.
It is such a simple technique, but it makes a noticeable difference in the finished tree.
You can also have fun with decorative stitches. Try Basketweave and Continental for the greenery, Mosaic for the ornaments, Satin Stitch for the bow, and Brick Stitch for the planter.
The result is lots of texture while keeping the project approachable for a confident beginner.
Don’t Hide This One in the Ornament Box
Although this is a relatively small canvas, I think it deserves to be displayed.
I especially love it framed in a small gold or bamboo-style frame. Add a gorgeous blue-and-white chinoiserie ribbon, and suddenly a small needlepoint project becomes part of your Christmas decorating.
It would also be beautiful finished as a small pillow or hanging ornament.
And because the design isn’t overwhelmingly “Christmas,” I can easily imagine the framed piece displayed throughout winter in a blue-and-white room.
Here’s where it gets even more fun.
If you love the Chinoiserie Christmas Tree, I also designed a matching Chinoiserie Gazebo with Christmas Wreath.. You can find it here

The two canvases share the same classic blue-and-white BeeBee Designs style and were made to coordinate.
Stitch the tree this year and the gazebo next—or stitch both and display them together as a little Chinoiserie Christmas collection.
I especially love the idea of two coordinating gold frames sitting together on a mantel, bookshelf, entry table or sideboard.
Sometimes one needlepoint piece is beautiful.
Two coordinating pieces begin a collection.

Make It Your Own
One of the things I love most about needlepoint is that the canvas is only the beginning.
Choose silks for a little luxury. Add a touch of sparkle to the ornaments. Use your favorite variegated green for the branches. Try decorative stitches—or keep everything simple with Tent Stitch.
There is no wrong way to make it yours.
The Chinoiserie Christmas Tree was designed for stitchers who love classic blue and white, grandmillennial style and a Christmas project that feels a little different from the usual red and green.
And if you fall in love with stitching this one, your matching gazebo will be waiting.
Happy stitching,
BeeBee
