Beautiful Bulbs for Spring

The purple-leaf shamrock is a low-growing foliage plant for the garden that also makes an attractive indoor plant with its rich, vibrant, purple leaves. The dark colors blend well and accent the colors of spring flowers. The touch of dark lavender among the bright yellows and whites and blues make a soft contrast in spring floral arrangements. To jumpstart the growth of the shamrock in the spring, you need to start in January.
Fill three-quarters of the container with potting mix. Set the bulbs (as many as the container will hold) on top, then scoop in more potting mix, to about an inch from the rim. Wet the bulbs with tepid water, then don’t water again until you see growth, in about three weeks. In about eight weeks, you will see blooms. Purple shamrock will grow indoors year-round if you give it three or more hours of sunlight a day and water when it’s dry to the touch. You can replant outside after using the purple shamrock as a spring arrangement. Take the bulbs and plant outside in April. Outside, purple shamrocks should be planted areas that are somewhat shaded. They need to be in the front of the bed to be seen, or they could be in a container that needs season-long color as they are low growing plants. When the weather is warm and there is adequate moisture, the shamrock blooms with small, pale pink, bell-like flowers. By fall, they will have multiplied themselves. Now, it’s time for the big decision. They can be dug and put into a pot and play the role of an indoor plant during the winter, or it is possible to store them like other summer bulbs in a dormant state and reactivate them in the spring. Because they multiply, you are able to do both. You can use them year round in the foyer centerpiece and also store bulbs for using in your forced bulbs arrangements for your spring tablescapes.
If the bulbs are going to be stored for the winter, dig chunks of roots and bulbs and gently remove as much soil as possible without having the chunks of tightly packed bulbs break apart. Place into a cardboard box or paper bags and bring into the house until the foliage dies down and dries up. Store the clumps of bulbs in a container like a cardboard box or paper bag and nestle them into a bed of dry sphagnum peat moss. The peat is acidic and it prevents any rots if they should start. Cool and dark conditions keep them dormant. Please don’t allow to freeze.
Mixed along with strong colors of greens and white, they make a beautiful contrast.
Most bulbs need a dormant period to bloom in spring. If you didn’t think to save your bulbs and give them a rest, you still have can have forced bulbs in the spring. Purchase your bulb plants from any garden center in early spring. I use already growing daffodils, hyacinths and tulips.

I use a white transferware piece bowl and put a small amount of soil inside. Break the bulbs apart and gently arrange in your container. Once I have arranged my flowers, I had another thin layer of soil, just to secure them . I add reindeer moss as an added appeal. You can also use Spanish moss. Be sure not to overwater as it will rot the bulbs. Just keep the soil slightly moist.

Wanderlust
Awwhh.. Home . USA. The last leg of the flight that says arriving at your final destination in 20 minutes. I’m back. Put your seatbelts on and prepare for landing. It’s been a whirlwind few days . As they say you can take the girl out of Carolina , but you can’t take the Carolina out of the girl. It’s good to be in Carolina for a few, but got my bags ready. Traveling abroad, learning another new language before you are proficient in one, you are taking on another. Thank goodness, for Google Translate and Yomi . Traveling to Japan was as with any other overseas flight, easy, but taking on the country’s inner transportation modes takes a quick learning curve. The most valuable tool a visitor need is Hyperdia. Put in your geo and destination and trains, buses, subways, all are shown . You realize early that the Japanese expect you to know their language. Most signage is in Japanese, however the people are friendly and will help.
To share the essence and beauty of Japan takes more than one blog post. It is an exciting country with history lessons in everyday living. On this visit I was able to visit The Ikebana Museum. Being mentored by a Japanese lady in the art of ikebana, this museum was like home away from home to my soul. I was lucky enough to show my work and have it critiqued .

The shrines are amazing and so many. The Sea of Japan is tranquil . I gathered sea glass abounding and shipped it separate. (I see another DIY project in the future). If you happen to travel to Japan, put the The Little White Flower as your stay. Close enough to visit the entire island, but off the beaten path. What a quaint, hospitable place.

Sounds of Spring
Sounds of Spring
Just before the sunrise and the sky is changing from dark to light, you can head the sounds of spring coming. The songs of the Carolina Birds. North Carolina has over 100 species of birds that call it home. During the winter , you see the birds at their feeders, but they don’t stay too long and head back to the brush and grass and wax myrtle . Sometimes when it warms up a bit, you will find them together on the feeders. But mostly they fly in to feed quickly.
During the winter months, I keep an ample supply of bird seeds thrown under the bushes and trees. I rolled the pinecones in peanut butter and cut of slices of apples and oranges and sunflower seeds and scatter them through the trees .
And now Spring is filling the air. Early in the mornings, you can hear them sing. The little Carolina Wren is a favorite. They are such a curious bird and will stay close ,even when you are moving. They want to see what you are doing.
The American goldfinches are a bit flighty. They perch in the wax myrtles and eat the berries, but try as I might, I can’t get too close. They only come back when they think the coast is clear.
The State Bird of North Carolina is the cardinal. They travel as a couple. Beautiful birds. They feed when the light is dim.
The Bluebird is a favorite. They love their babies. Both mom and dad bluebirds work feverishly to build their nest. The male bluebird stays perch high to watch and calls out to the female bluebird as she finds food and carries it back to the babies.
Many others visit . Mourning Doves, CatBirds, Jaybirds, Robins, Titmice and the adorable Bobwhites . You see woodpeckers in the hardwoods. Mockingbirds swooping in. Martins looks for a gourd home. The cute warblers singing back and forth to each other. There is usually a hawk flying overhead and the crane come in to visit at the ponds. The nightime owl hoots at dusk. Spring mornings are such a delight listening to the birds thanking God for another day.

I love this little story. My husband and I travel quite a bit. We are sitting in a restaurant in Japan. The waitress asked what we would like to drink. My husband replies soğuk su. I laugh. Definitely he has travel warp. Traveling all over the globe and living in a foreign country , you absorb their culture and language. He laughs too and points to the menu. We hadn’t learned the word for water in Japanese yet. Yep, the next stop will be to learn Japanese.
Traveling globally in the past six years gives you knowledge of what you need and don’t really need for your stay.
Here is my list of “I need” when traveling.
My passport and immunizations chart in a passport cover. I love my passport cover. Not only does it keep my passport looking new, but it has document slots inside that I can carry cards, and other id. This is a must on your list.

Tags for your luggage.
You want to tag your luggage. You want to tag it inside and out. There have several trips I made it to my destination and my luggage took the scenic route.
And there have been times when it arrived, you can tell it had been inspected thoroughly along the way. I actually have my home address and contact numbers laminated inside my luggage just in case the tags gets lost .
My favorite tags are
Abas Glitter-Leather Luggage Tag & Passport Sleeve
You can add your initials and with the sparkly tag, it reflects when going around on the luggage run and easily spotted.
A clear toiletries holder.
I learned this from my first adventure. When going through customs, they inspect everything. Some countries are more thorough than others. It holds everyone up when, you have a toiletries bag that has to be rumbled through. With the clear holders, the inspectors see the contents and no need of unzipping and zipping a bag. They appreciate it too. More than once, I have been thanked for having a clear bag.

Good pair of sunglasses. And you want a sturdy pair. They will get a beating. Between being in the bottom of my tote and ipad on top, I wonder how they stay intact. My favorites are Brighton. Just because. My husband swears by his ray bans.
Noise Blocker
I didn’t think this was important until flights became 18 hours or more. It is nothing more annoying than traveling beside a snoring person or a chatty kathy.
Having my noise blockers on, even with them turned off , you aren’t bothered. They are worth the investment.

Phone Charger
Having to plan travel around charging your electronics is a waste. It is like having to remember to put money in a parking meter. After two times of zero battery left on my phone, I said never again. I just love my Mophie

I guess this must-have is a given and need not be mentioned. But after traveling and watching others , I realized some don’t think of shoes. You need comfortable shoes. It doesn’t matter what brand. What matters is that they are broken in, fit your feet and have some cushion. Buy them before leaving USA. Shoes are more expensive in European countries.
My favorites are
Superga ‘Cotu’ Sneaker (Women) | Nordstrom
Last of all , the best investment is your handbag. This goes everywhere with you and it holds everything together. It needs a zippered top and many slots in inside. I use a shouldered one and wear it in front of me as a cross body bag.I know my bag so well, I can reach inside and feel and know which slots hold what. There are so many to pick from.

It’s National Gum Drop Day !
It’s National Gum Drop Day !
If the Valentine chocolates weren’t enough for celebration and indulgence, how about a box of gumdrops. February 15 is National Gum Drop Day. When and where this celebration originated is in question, but I’m so glad the gumdrop deserves it day on the celebration calendar.
Gum Drops were used in one of my first creations. My Mother had a clear plastic tree with little points on the end. It was a sad looking tree. The first time I saw it, I wondered why in the world Mother pulled it out at Christmas. She sent me next door to the local grocer that sold penny candy. I gave the grocer the handwritten note from my mother and he went to the candy counter and filled up a brown little bag with assorted gumdrops. He handed me a couple in my hand and said “Enjoy”..
source Mast General Store
When I got home, Mother poured the gumdrops out on the table beside the spindly little tree. She began sticking them onto the tree. Oh my goodness. For a six year old , this was as good as making paper snowflakes . I designed this little tree over and over. Sometime putting all one-color gum drops. Sometimes in just white and red or red on one side and green on the other. Mother would set the tree in the center of the dining table for breakfast guests. It became my responsibility to keep the tree full of gumdrops. I looked forward to end of the day to decorate it all over again. When the little spindly tree was put away at Christmas, I missed it as much as packing up the ornaments for next year. I have my own spindly tree. In fact , I have three. They are in different colors and I even used my gumdrop tree at Easter with Easter egg colors of gumdrops.
Enjoy your GumDrop Day. Play a game of CandyLand . Watch a movie with gumdrop dots and popcorn. Even CandyCrush loves it’s gumdrops.
Pinecone Zinnias
Today was a day of cleaning up limbs that had fell from the snowfall last week. Among the limbs were lots of pinecones. I use pinecones in many of my rustic, fall and country designs. I like their textured feel and look and they add dimension to a design. I am always researching new ways of design and I came across an article on creating zinnias from pinecones. What a fun idea. I decided to give it a try. How easy they are to create.
What you will need :
Sponge Brush, Paints, mod podge acrylic sealant, and pinecones.
Any type of pine cone will work. Just be sure the bottom of it turned upwards resembles a flower. You can use different sizes of pinecones as you are creating “a bouquet” .
Once you gather your pinecones, Dry brush them to clean any pine straw and dirt off .
Some use spray paint to color the pinecones. I tried it , but found that it spattered and was a little messy. So I opted for the acrylic craft paint and a sponge brush. It gives me more control of getting into the cracks and layers of the pinecone.
I let the paint set for about a minute on the pinecone and then I dry brushed it for an outdoorsy and natural look.
I dabbed a little yellow paint in the center to create the pollen part of the zinnia. Don’t be afraid to layer different colors and layer shades for depth.

The paint will be dry to the touch in about an hour, but I wanted to be sure it was completely dry in all the nooks and crannies. I waited until morning for the next step. I sealed them with the modpodge sealant. Let them dry and you are ready to arrange them in a beautiful bowl . They make a great accent piece. I love the colors they add to a room Be creative. You can use them to make a wreath or string them as a garland. Here is a link to a step by step tutorial on creating pinecone zinnias .
Just Because it’s Valentines Day
Last minute goodies for the children. Floral arrangements completed, Valentine cards in the mail, chocolate covered strawberries done. I still have a few gifts to finish. This idea is so easy and best of all, you are not in the kitchen. I found it at Design Mom . I created the tags in silhouette and use print and cut. The jute twine was two for a dollar at Target. The glassine bags can be ordered from Amazon. I purchased four dozen dunkin donuts especially decorated for Valentines. Super easy gift for saying I am thinking of you on this special day.
You can download your name tag file here. Please visit Design Mom for her other great ideas. Wishing you and yours a Happy Valentines Day .
The Pretty Pineapple
I recently visited a doctor to discuss some minor surgery. We set the date and she gave me a packet of instructions in a glossy folder to take home for reference in how to prepare for my upcoming surgery. Starting 2 weeks before surgery were several things. Number one was to take a multivitamin daily. Add to that were supplements of Vitamin A and Vitamin C. The next supplement was Bromelain. It said I could pick this up at a local health food store. I didn’t have a clue what it was. Much to my surprise, I found it was a pineapple enzyme. It helps in reducing swelling. And the instructions said to continue it for four weeks. I am curious by nature and I researched it. I found lots about the benefits of Bromelain Another reason I love The Pretty Pineapple.
Pineapples have been in my life as long as I can remember. Our Bed and Breakfast Hotel had a door knocker with two pineapples and the word WELCOME underneath. I learned early the pineapple was a symbol of hospitality in the South. We had a pineapple toothpick holder; pineapple canister set and even towel sets of pineapple print. Southern recipes love the pineapple. You can find it in main dishes, salsas, pizzas, jams, cakes, pies, ice cream, drinks and cocktails. Nothing much better than a sliced grilled pineapple served with chicken or even by itself with a scoop of ice cream. Try these recipes .
Pineapples were first discovered by the Europeans in 1493 on the Caribbean Island now known as Guadeloupe.
When Christopher Columbus brought pineapples back to Europe, attempts were made to cultivate the sweet fruit. They soon realized that the pineapples needed a tropical climate to flourish.
By the end of the 16th century, Portuguese and Spanish explorers introduced pineapples into many of their Asian, African and South Pacific colonies and these countries still grow the pineapples today.
Pineapples were a welcome gift in the tropics. Years ago, ways of travel were slow and fresh pineapples were a rare luxury.
The fresh pineapple was highly sought after, becoming a true symbol of prestige and social class. In fact, the pineapple, because of its rarity and expense, was such a status item that if a hostess displayed the fruit as part of a decorative centerpiece, she was awarded social awe and recognition. Colonial confectioners rented pineapples to households by the day. The same fruit later in the day was sold to other, more affluent clients who actually ate it.
In the 1600s, King Charles II of England posed for an official portrait and in this portrait he is seen receiving a pineapple as a gift. , It symbolized a gift of royal privilege. The pineapple was used by political cartoonists during the Napoleonic Wars to symbolize extravagance.
During the 20th century, the pineapple primarily symbolized hospitality. American Sea Captains placed the fruit outside their homes to signal to friends that they had returned from sea. It was this act that began the trend of stone pineapples being placed at the entrance of the finer homes.![]()

Today we see pineapples on just about everything in the South. It is on gates, bedposts, crockery, napkins, tablecloths and door knockers.
There is even a pineapple fountain at Waterfront Park in Charleston SC
source: SC Chamber of Commerce
The Pretty Pineapple. It is my favorite fruit.

source Pinterest
Decorating with pineapples is easy. The Pretty Pineapple sitting by itself is gorgeous. And when you add a ring of plumeria or hibiscus flowers around the bottom of it, you are ready for a luau… Add a few coconuts or strands of shells near the pineapples and you have a natural look for the party.
I use pineapples in floral design quite a bit. The skin of the pineapple is so visually interesting that is looks beautiful when used as a vase for floral centerpieces. Cut the top off of a pineapple remove the fruit from the inside with a pineapple corer. Add floral foam snugly to the inside of the skin. Wrap floral wire around the stems of flowers, and insert the wire into the foam until you have a beautiful centerpiece. Place a wire into the center of the spiky-stemmed top, and use it as part of the arrangement. Voila, it’s sings sunshine.
And at Christmas, you will find The Pretty Pineapple gracing the entrances of churches, and the grand homes and taverns of the South. The symbol that all are welcomed and will receive Southern Hospitality.

Plan a trip to Williamsburg VA and you can spot The Pretty Pineapple in every crook and crannie, even in the stables and their beautiful gardens. Please share your ideas of how you use the pretty pineapple in your home. The possibilities are endless.
Celebrating 50 years with Southern Living
There is one magazine you will see on the coffee table in any Southern home. It is the Southern Living. I grew up with this magazine. In fact, the first recipe I cooked in my mom’s kitchen was from Mother’s Southern Living Cookbook 1967. It was a homemade pecan pie. When I say homemade, indeed it was. My Mother and Daddy operated a bed and breakfast. My childhood years were spent growing up in a home with 33 rooms and three stories. Guests were in and out all the time and many became lifelong friends. My Mother’s kitchen was always busy. The home had a huge dining area and the kitchen door swung both ways. I’m getting a little off track, a memory I’ll discuss another time. Back to the my first pecan pie. Mother taught me how to knead the dough for a pie crust. The secret was in the handling of the dough and keeping it lightly floured. Mother had several rolling pins and my favorite was the smallest one with the red handles. It fit into my small hands perfectly. I rolled the dough out . I then took a large dinner plate and placed it on the rolled out dough and cut around the plate with a knife. A perfect circle. I then carefully placed the circle into a pie dish. The next part of the recipe came from her Southern Living cookbook. Fresh eggs, sugar, a touch of karo syrup , butter, Watkins vanilla extract and pecans from the trees that grew in our back yard. Bake until set at 350 degrees. Add a touch of whipped cream and serve. I know this recipe from memory.
And can you believe it ? Southern Living Magazine is celebrating it’s 50 anniversary this month.
My library is filled with their cookbooks of years back and many of their magazines. I can not part with them. They are stored in boxes, and my husband reminds me every year it is time to declutter. They aren’t clutter to me. The anniversary edition is a look back into history of the South and Celebrating the South in all its finest.. The anniversary celebration was a combination of an old fashion get together complimented with Southern Hospitality. The details of the event are true to the South. I know you will want to get a copy for your own coffee table.

Another reason I love this magazine is they give with the times. They offer a Southern Living app that you download to your ipad. If you are a subscriber, all you do is open the app and the issues are downloaded to your ipad. You can read them before they are on the stands. You have them readily available while waiting at a doctor’s appointment or having your hair done. Back issues stay in the bookstand on your ipad. You still get your magazine in the mail . This is just an added perk of being a Southern Living subscriber.
The edition is jammed pack with 50 tips on gardening, 50 style picks , 50 Southern getaways , and even the 50 most prized recipes of the South . Grab your copy and enjoy . I don’t plan on letting go of my Southern Livings anytime soon.
Arranging the Roses
You open the front door and by gosh, there is a long box sent FedEx addressed to you. If you are lucky enough to have your sweetheart with you every day, believe me, you are lucky enough. Many of us share our love one with the military, government work overseas, and organizations that keep the world safe . I am one of them. My wonderful husband keeps us safe. And not just America, though his heart is red, white and blue. He keeps us safe, I mean, the world. Global peace drives him and he makes a difference in a better way every day in his work. So I share him with the world. We are united forever in our love and commitment to each other. We are as one. Though there is distance between us, our heartstrings go across the globe. So on Valentine’s Day, there will be a FedEx box at my door. And inside will be roses. Because I am a designer, my husband sends a box of flowers, not a prearranged vase of flowers. He knows my passion for design.

Not everyone has this talent, my daughter tells me. So I want to share with you the most basic steps that you can use to make your flower arrangement look like a pro.
If you receive a dozen red roses, the first thing you do is. Prepare a sugar-clorox mix of one-half cup granulated sugar and two teaspoons of clorox in a two-gallon pail of warm water. This is basic to the longevity of the roses. The sugar keeps the roses developing and the Clorox prevents bacteria from forming and clouding the water.
Once you have your water ready, submerge your roses into the bucket of water. Take a sharp knife and cut the stem while holding it under water and cut at a 45 degree angle. Leave the roses sitting the water. Continue this with all your roses.
Find the vase you want to accent your roses. This is the trick you will want to remember. You can easily arrange your flowers and keep them standing up in the vase, by using clear tape. Yep, that’s right. Take the tape and zigzag it across the top of vase. Just make sure the top of the vase is dry when you put it on.
Now go back to your roses and strip them of their thorns and leaves, leaving just a few leaves close to the head of the rose. You can use a paring knife for this; however there is a special knife that we use in floral design. If your flowers came with filler foliage, such as baker’s fern, you will want to clean the fuzz off of its stems as well. Once this is completed, it is time to kiss the rose, as I say. The outer petals of the rose are called guard petals. They will look a little wilted or brown at the top edges. Just pull them of off. Your roses will look like a bud or tight rose. Don’t worry, they will open up. You then cut your roses’ stems to 1 and 1 half times the height of your vase.
You are ready to create. Crisscross the stems of baker’s fern, if you have it and insert into your vase. If not, start by inserting your first stem of roses into the vase, and then place the next stem across it and continue crossing each new stem over the last one until the glass is full. This is done between the spaces in the tape. You will see the stems crisscrossing in the water of the vase. This keeps the flowers from moving and the tape helps give a newbie a guide of arranging at an angle. Once you have placed all the flowers in the vase, you can move them a little to put your finishing touch on it. And you are done.
Remember your flowers love water. Give them plenty in the morning and evening.
And one more little tidbit, just because you have a dozen red roses , you don’t have to keep them all together.. I usually make a tall vase of six and then make a round design with the other six. This is arranging them tight in a low vase. Roses like to touch. And this design is a great accent on an end or foyer table.

If you ever noticed, you see this style quite a bit on the morning news at the anchor desk of the hosts. Wishing you all a very Happy Valentine’s Day. And please keep our love ones overseas in your prayers and thoughts. Though they are miles away, their hearts never left home. God Bless America!

Chocolate Dipped Strawberries
Valentines Day is just around the corner. I am putting the finishing touches on my sweethearts gifts. The personalized handtowels are completed. The name tags with jute twine and glassine bags for the heart shape donuts are finished. Now it is time to dip the strawberries. Yippee!
The most important ingredients are the strawberries. I look for the large firm bright red ones. You don’t want them too ripe. Firm is the secret.
I use white and dark chocolates. My favorite is the white chocolate drizzled with dark chocolate rolled in oreo cookie crumbs.
I start with a small bowl with water, holding the strawberry by the stem and immerse only the red part of the berry in the water. I then place it on a paper towel to dry completely. It is important that the berries are completely dry before dunking in chocolate. I use chocolate chips . They are easy to melt in the microwave and I melt the different flavors of chocolate in individual bowls. You can add a little vegetable oil to make the chocolate shiny. You can also find pink color white chocolate. It is such a pretty pastel pink . I don’t use food coloring as it makes the chocolate pasty. I researched it and found that most grocery store food colorings are water based, however you can find oil-based food coloring in gourmet shops. If you want to spurge little and have hardly any cleanup, use Wilton’s melts.
I also melt chocolate in a squeeze bottle to use in drizzling chocolate for the added touches. I set it in a mason jar of hot water to keep it easier to control when decorating. After dunking the berries in the chocolates, and before the chocolate gets totally hard, I rolled each strawberry in different toppings. It is the fun part . I use crushed oreo crumbs, peppermint, nuts, sprinkles, caramel, and graham crumbs. After rolling them, I drizzle chocolate from the squeeze bottles to add a textured look. Honestly, you can decorate them in so many ways.
I then place them on parchment paper to dry.
Store in a cool place or the fridge (uncovered or loosely covered) for up to 8 hours before serving.(If you can wait that long.) If they are stored longer, than three days, the juice from the berries begins to slowly leak out of the bottom and pools at the base of each berry. They still taste good , but the berry can get mushy.
A fun afternoon, super simple and made just for my special sweethearts.

He is not a native of North Carolina but he reminds me of a saying my husband told me when we met. ” I may not have been born in North Carolina, but I got here as soon as I could”. Nicholas Sparks resides in New Bern NC. This little town,in fact, is where my husband and I spent part of our honeymoon. A beautiful, quaint, easy living city on the Neuse and Trent Rivers .
It is the birthplace to Pepsi. And Pepsi has its own museum you can visit. My husband and I visit New Bern when we are passing through traveling to Atlantic Beach, NC. And in our last visit, my husband took me on the tour by Nicholas Sparks’ home. I know, of course, we didn’t see Nicholas, but the ride on the river was worth it all, plus seeing his home was a treat. When Nicholas Sparks’ book , The Notebook was made into film, my girlfriends and I had to see it. We were then forever fans of anything Nicholas wrote . And he has continued to write many love stories . When his book, Nights in Rodanthe was being filmed at the Outer Banks, I had friends who auditioned to be extras and were able to say, ” I was in a movie with Richard Gere.” You can still see the cottage , Serendipity, but it has been purchased and moved to a safer location. After Hurricane Bill, it nearly crumbled into the ocean. In the movie it was called The Inn At Rodanthe.

And then the book made-movie Safe Haven. It was filmed in the beautiful fishing village of Southport. The setting was true to the essence of Southport. Watch this movie and you will feel Southport’s charm.

So if you a lover of great romance-dramas and love a book you can’t put down, start with The Lucky One. Another one of his great books. Nicholas Spark’s books all have a place in my library and have been borrowed more than I can count. This week, sit with a glass of wine and a book by Nicholas. By Valentines Day, you will believe love can carry you through anything.
Classic White Blouse
Aww. A crisp white blouse. It is a classic. No southern lady’s wardrobe has only one. We have at least ten or more and they are in different styles and length of sleeves. Some will be monogramed. Some will be fitted and others will be oversized for lounging, possibly your boyfriend’s or husband’s. One thing for sure, you can always use a new one. And when we are out shopping, we will go by the rack of white blouses just to see what it is complimenting in this new year’s fashion. A crisp white blouse adds a fresh look to many outfits. It looks as awesome with jeans as it does with a business suit . Paired with a long ballroom skirt, the look is stunning. It goes from casual to sophisticated and back to cuddly comfort for lounging. I wear mine tucked, untucked, wrapped, layered, unbuttoned, buttoned-up, sleeves rolled. It is the ultimate all-season wardrobe essential .
My white shirt collection goes way back and I couldn’t part with any of them. They vary in their styles but the one thing they have in common ; all have a crisp white starched look. Many are monogramed. White on white and there is the black monogram on white . This is my favorite. I wear my white shirt with the black monogram with jeans. It pairs well with black trousers , layered with a red sweater tied around my shoulders. My accessories include a single necklace during the day. My daytime jewelry favorites are by Brighton. For dinner, I change out to a single strand of pearls and dressier shoes to complete the look.
Bright white doesn’t flatter everyone’s skintone.. So a “white” shirt might be soft white or a very pale pastel . If it’s makes you light up, it is the perfect white. Just remember if it is crisp and starched looking, you will look amazing.
What I’m looking for when shopping in a white shirt are several things. It needs a structured collar, The shirt collar brightens the face and should be sturdy. The armhole seam should line up with the edge of your shoulder and they should not bind when you reach your arms across your chest. The seams of the shirt should be tailored with darting. This gives the illusion of length in your middle. The length of the sleeves depends upon the style of shirt. I make sure the shirt is opaque enough not show any undergarment . A rounded shirttail reduces bulk and flatters your hips by drawing attention to your center. And always I look for the blend of fabric. There are many classic white shirts that are made with stretch cotton. This keeps wrinkles to a minimum and they are so comfortable.

My all time favorite crisp white shirt is a Brooks Brothers Non-Iron Dress Shirt specially treated to remain virtually wrinkle-free and machine washable.
I Love my Chico’s ¾-length sleeved white no iron blouses. I have three: one is fitted .I wear it tucked in or out . I have one size larger to wear out and use a belt with just a little of it hanging below my sweater. My third is a longer length that I wear with leggings; and it’s perfect for travel.
And my classics are Jones New York and Talbots. You can always use another white shirt.

Set the Table
Down South, we like parties and festivals. If a friends says they are throwing a party, you know it is going to be a good time. Throwing a party takes some preparation. You don’t want to be in the kitchen when the drinks are being pour. It takes a couple of weeks pulling a tailgating party together and for a backyard barbeque, we start planning sometime a month out. We even create our own invites and mail them out. If you are in a pinch, and forgot someone, you will attach that pretty made invite to an email and hit send. We know a phone call is not enough . A true Southerner wants you to have a written invitation. My Mother, Bless Her Heart, has a tattered steno binder where she keeps addresses . All through the years when you visited at her home, before you left , she would gracefully ask your address and number. She would hand you a pen that wrote in sharp black tucked in the binder . She taught me to never write an address or a check in red. Later, she compiled them in her address book that she carries in her purse. Needless to say, this was past down to me . Thank goodness, now for the handy apps for creating contacts. I never have to offer a pen. Mother would be shaking her head at me if she knew.
A big amount of time is spent in creating the theme or “atmosphere” as Mother would say. Tablescaping is born in a Southern Girl. We have sets of dishes we use for each occasion. We have loosen up a little bit on plates and glasses. You can find paper plates and solo cups at some functions, but the standard is firm on the serving dishes. Food is served in cookware. We take great pride in our serving bowls and cake stands. The table is not complete without a floral arrangement. Since I am a designer, I get the phone call saying, “I’m throwing a Low Boil and have 30 guests. Will you fix me up something pretty for the tables?” Being I’m not the best cook in the world; Gosh , how I love Sandra Lee, Semi-Homemaking, I happily say, “ Leave your party flowers to me.” Just know, if we are having a party, somewhere there will be flowers on the table, even tailgating, you will see queen anne’s lace in a Pepsi bottle.
Good food, lots of it will be on hand . The recipes are true Southern. And there is going to be a big dessert table sitting by itself. Desserts in the South have their place in the South. The tables will be loaded and when asked for the recipe , my goodness, you don’t really remember. It is an old recipe past down in your family and all you do is add a pinch of this and a dab of that.
If you happen to make your way to the South and lucky enough to be invited to a party someone is throwing, you’ll get their blessings , if you bring a dish of your own. It is not in the invite. Southerners just know. It’s etiquette.
At a Backyard BarBeCue, here is what you can expect. Grilled Brisket and Chicken, Hot potato salad, coleslaw , and Pork and Beans, seasoned with onions, green peppers and thin slices of hotdogs. The kids go back for this one. There will be a pineapple casserole, squash casserole, and vinegar base salad. Don’t forget the rolls On the dessert table, expect to find chocolate pie, lemon pound cake, and better than sex cake and cupcakes for the kids. And the older folks are sitting by the ice cream maker, keeping it packed with ice. There will be corn hole boards, country golf and a few fireworks. The tables will have hydrangea, hosta, wax myrtle, sunflowers gracing the tables.
If your invite says we are just tailgating down by the river, make sure you bring your own cooler, stocked with beer and wine coolers. It doesn’t have to be fancy foodwise. Just some fried chicken, wings, hotdogs, burgers and coleslaw. Throw in a bag of sliced apples and cubed cheese. And the guys love the chips and pretzels.. Dessert is cookies. And remember lots of beer. There will be a sound system sitting on the back of a fella’s tailgate. You will hear Darius Rucker at least once, singing Rock Me Baby, like an Wagon Wheel. The girls know first hand to bring bug spray and a hat. I show up with queen anne’s lace in mason jars . This party goes on til after dark.
Living near the coast , you will get invited at least twice in the year to a low boil. Come with a big appetite and lots of napkins. You’ll find grits, vegetables and few side dishes, but the main table will be shrimp, crab legs, corn on cob, taters, onions, bay seasonings and butter , lots of it. It is steamed boiled and then it spread out on a long table covered with paper. The guys don’t sit down. They stand around the table and jack jar and crack the crab legs and and you will hear more than once, “This taste like more.” Desserts are pies made with every berry from the South. The flowers are bright. Zinnias and Mums.
And if are kin to someone from the South, you will get the invitation to come on home . The annual family reunion. Remember that steno binder, my Mother keeps her addresses in. Well, she pulls it out and starts writing her envelops. This can go on for two to three days. Mother invites second-cousins removed and even forgives you if you went up north to make a living. She knows you are Carolina at heart. You will get an invitation.
Family Reunions are an event. And the best way to describe this menu. Everybody brings their favorite recipe. You just bring your appetite. The flowers will be seasonal and each table will be graced with its own centerpiece.
See you at “The Fat Table !”
Free Design of Personalized Coasters

My personalized burlap coasters were a hit. I made three dozen sets . I am now ready for a burst of color. I found an adorable DIY idea on creating your own coasters with Silhouette. The results are adorable and functional too. And so so inexpensive.
I found four clear coasters at a dollar store for a dollar.
I designed my chevron circular insert for coasters using the Silhouette Cameo. I used heavy cardstock. You can download my design at this link. Its Free and you can change your colors and design.
You paint the coasters any color you want. You can even leave them clear. I chose cornflower blue.
Let them dry.
You then a put a dab of Mod Podge Matte,
inside the coasters and spread it around.
Insert your personalized designs, making sure you push all the air bubbles out.
Let them dry.
Spray with Modge Pod clear sealant. Any clear sealant will work. I just keep Modge Pod on hand.
Dry and do this three times just to be sure the seal is tight
Let them dry.
And that’s it. Voila.. They are so cute and practical and can be done to match any deco.. I am making a dozen sets of “ just because” to accent a bottle of wine and cheese gift.
Hen on a Basket
Ask any Southerner what is a Hen in the Basket and they will tell you. “Why, that is my Grandmother’s candy dish.” Growing up in North Carolina, I was lucky to have family that lived in big farm homes. They had huge front and back porches. The bedrooms were upstairs and the living and kitchen were downstairs . There was a sitting room where we gathered around on Sunday afternoons. My grandmother decorated with doilies on the back of her chairs and there was a Regulator Grandfather clock on the wall. My granddad cleaned it with a feather from a goose.
But what I remember the most and dearly loved when I visited were her teacakes she hid in a cupboard drawer wrapped in a cooking cloth and the Hen in the Basket sitting on the side table beside her rocking chair. The hen in the basket was made of milk glass. It was white. I loved the way it felt in my hands. Smooth ,even the designs of the feathers glided when you rubbed your hand across it. Inside the hen was candy. Most of the time, it was filled with hard candies. At Christmas, it had peppermints and chocolate. I could never get the hen to set back in place on the basket . My grandmother would go behind me and show me how it had to fit perfectly in the grooves of the basket. Through a child’s eye, the hen in the basket was as unique as the little rooster toothpick holder that sat in her kitchen. My grandmother had many grandchildren and I felt honored and humble when she gave me her Hen in the Basket. She said she was going to buy herself a blue hen in the basket and knew the white hen would be safe with me. So this pretty hen in the basket who is now 90 plus years old sits on my side table.
I fell in love with milk glass and through the years have collected it. You never know where you may find it. I have found pieces of pink milk glass in thrift stores. Of course, collectors know its value and when I visit an antique store, I may find it , but the cost sometimes keeps me from purchasing it. There has been a comeback of milk glass in floral design in recent years. The softness of the glass adds a touch of romance to any wedding. It is beautiful when used in outdoor entertaining. Because of its understated muted beauty, it creates a feeling of warmth and coziness. Today you can find dishes, vases, figurines, perfume bottles lanterns , even salt and pepper shakers made of milk glass. And of course, don’t’ forget the Christmas bulbs of milk glass.
So just what is the origin of milk ?
Milk glass originated in Venice in the 16th century. However, back then milk glass came in all different colors including yellow, brown, black, pink and blue. All of these colors were ‘milky’ color So the tone is thick and coated. Some of these colors still exist in milk glass, especially the blue. Throughtout the years it has been a glass that is heavy enough to be used in dishes and vases, yet the colors delicate enough to be used in celebrations and deco of each century.
Milk glass became very popular at the end of the 19th century in France. It was considered a product of the ‘fin de siecle’. Milk glass was synonymous with French cultural awareness .
During the early 20th century, milk glass was synonymous with the prosperity of the wealthy Americans. Milk glass made in the early 20th century still remains some of the best ever made. It is known for the delicacy and elegance and were often seen on dressers and shelf tops in upper-class American homes. So when you are browsing in the antique malls, check the dates and manufacturers on the bottoms of the piece. During the 1930’s, milk glass made during the Depression was considered less elegant and delicate. Because of this, milk glass made during the 1930’s and 1940’s is considered of lesser quality.
During the 1930 and 40’s , many glass companies started producing the hen in the baskets. And they weren’t in just milk glass. One of my favorites is the cranberry clear hen. Indiana Glass produced them and you can even find them on online auctions. They are called by many names; candy dish, jewelry dish, pickle dish, hen dish, chicken dish, rooster dish but if you are from the South, you know. they are the Hen in a Basket dish.
A White Bowl of Lemons
I always have a big white bowl of lemons sitting my kitchen. Growing up I learned from my mother, that lemons were a staple in a Southern home. They are just as important as having butter in your fridge. From homemade lemonade to lemon sugar scrubs or repelling insects, lemons share their sunshine in my life.. If I don’t find myself needing a lemon in a day , I will slice one up and arrange it in a clear vase, topping it off with a bouquet for the kitchen table. The yellow color just makes a happier table, even on a cloudy day.
Lemons are one of the most versatile fruits . They love to join in cooking, from squeezing one on pasta or layering on broiled fish. It is packed with nutrients. And all southern sweet tea comes with a slice of lemon. Lemon juice is an acid and it is a natural disinfectant. The lovely lemon even deters pests. It helps preserve food and can easily replace harsh chemical-based ingredients. For me, I love the luscious lemon in the bath . There is no lovier scent than lavender and lemon. Even Yankee Candles know this. I light the candle by my Jacuzzi and pour oils of lemon and lavender based into the water. What a way to unwind. After cleansing my face, I use lemon juice as an astringent. I use a homemade lemon sugar scrub and afterwards, a lotion of lemongrass by Dani.
I know I’m a little obsessive about lemons, but what Southern Girl isn’t ?
Here are just a few reasons why you want a bowl of lemons.
Sooth Sore Throats
Gargle a mixture of lemon juice, warm tea and honey before bed. Helps ease your sore throat .
Travel Sickness Cure
Suck on a slice of lemon to help you stop feeling nauseous.
Create a Scented Humidifier
If you live in a dry winter climate, put lemon peels in a pot of water and simmer on low to humidify and oh the aroma is divine.
Bleach Dishes
Fill the sink with warm or boiling water and lemon skins. Soak the dishes for a couple of hours. Rinse and wipe dry. All stains will be gone.
Clean Microwaves
Combine 3 tablespoons lemon juice and 1-1/2 cups water in a microwave-safe bowl. Cook on high for 5 minutes, allowing the water to boil and the steam to condense on the walls and tops of the oven. Carefully remove the hot bowl and wipe away the mess with a wet sponge. This works every time. No harsh chemicals.
Cutting Boards
Because of their acid, lemons have antibacterial properties that makes them perfect for refreshing a cutting boards. Scrub the cutting with a heavy pad and then rub the surface with half a lemon . Let it sit for a few minutes before rinsing.
Create Blond Highlights
if you are lucky enough to be a blond, then you need to keep a lemon with you in the summertime. Shampoo hair and rinse with a mixture of 1/4 cup lemon juice and 3/4 cup water. Bask in the sun until your hair dries. Repeat daily for one week to maximize the effect.
Make Fires Smell Good
Fires smell divine on their own, but a few lemon peels tossed on the flames give off a twist of lemon that is just lovely. And I love to watch the Sparks that rise up .
Create Your Own Sugar Scrubs

Cooking with A Lemon
And of course, the reason my mother kept her bowl of lemons. She used them in any recipe that needed a touch of zest.

And while you are still squeezing those lemons, here is a great recipe for your own lemon extract.
