Christmas Chinoiserie Needlepoint: Stitching Our 4-Inch Ginger Jar

There is something timeless about blue-and-white chinoiserie, and this little ginger jar may be one of my favorite ways to bring that classic look to needlepoint.

The BeeBee Designs Chinoiserie Ginger Jar is a 4-inch round needlepoint canvas on 14-count mono canvas, digitally painted in the BeeBee Designs style. I wanted this design to feel traditional and elegant while still being approachable and enjoyable to stitch.

The blue-and-white ginger jar is decorated with a classic floral motif, then dressed for the holidays with a rich red bow, greenery, and bright berries. A soft blue circular border finishes the design and makes it especially pretty when finished as an ornament.

Why I Chose 14 Mesh

I love 14-count mesh for designs like this because it gives the stitcher plenty of possibilities. The openings are large enough to work comfortably, and the canvas accommodates many beautiful fibers.

It is also a wonderful mesh size for stitchers who are newer to needlepoint or simply want a relaxing project without the tiny detail of a finer mesh.

Although this design has plenty of visual interest, most of it can be worked with familiar stitches. Tent stitch and basketweave are perfect for the ginger jar and its detailed blue-and-white pattern.

For a little more texture, I suggest satin stitch for the larger areas of the red bow. The change in stitch direction gives the bow a subtle dimension without making the project complicated.

Your BeeBee Designs Stitch & Thread Guide Is Included

One thing I want BeeBee Designs stitchers to have is a starting point.

That is why this canvas comes with a BeeBee Designs Stitch & Thread Guide created specifically for the ginger jar.

The guide identifies the different areas of the design and provides suggested stitches and Pepper Pot Silk colors, including shades for the blues, reds, greens and background.

You will also find close-up examples of the bow, ginger jar and greenery so you can see how those areas can be stitched.

And remember: a stitch guide is a guide, not a rule book. If you have a favorite fiber or want to add a little sparkle, make the canvas your own.

BeeBee Tip: Try adding a touch of metallic thread to the berries or small accents for just a hint of holiday shimmer.

From Canvas to Christmas Ornament

At only 4 inches round, this is a very manageable project to finish in time for the holidays.

I especially love the idea of finishing it as a round ornament with blue cording and a coordinating backing. It would be beautiful hanging on a Christmas tree, displayed on an ornament stand, or given as a handmade gift.

It could also be finished as a small pillow, coaster, or decorative insert.

And while the red bow and greenery make it perfect for Christmas, the traditional ginger jar keeps the design from feeling overly seasonal. It fits beautifully with grandmillennial, chinoiserie, traditional and preppy décor.
