There are the needlepoint basics: canvas, threads, needles, and scissors. And then there are those little extras that make you wonder, “Why didn’t I think of this sooner?”
Over time, I’ve discovered that some of my favorite needlepoint accessories weren’t necessarily designed specifically for needlepoint. They simply make stitching, organizing, and traveling with a project so much easier.
Here are a few of my favorites.

A Snag Nab-It Tool
This funny little tool may not look exciting, but once you need it, you’ll be very glad it’s in your stitching bag.
A Snag Nab-It can help pull a loose or stray thread through to the back of your work instead of leaving it sticking out on the front. It’s especially handy when working with beautiful silks and specialty threads.
BeeBee Tip: Keep one tucked into your regular needle case so you always know where it is.
Needle Threaders
I consider needle threaders an essential—especially when I’m switching colors frequently or working with threads that don’t want to cooperate.
They save time, save frustration, and make threading a tapestry needle much easier. I particularly like having several inexpensive ones around because those tiny things have a mysterious habit of disappearing!
Small Embroidery Scissors
A pretty little pair of sharp embroidery scissors makes stitching more enjoyable. I like a small pair that can stay right beside my project rather than constantly hunting for the household scissors.
They’re perfect for clipping threads close and neatly, and a beautiful pair feels like a tiny luxury in your stitching bag.
A Travel Organizer
One of my favorite ideas is using a small travel organizer to hold needlepoint notions.
The little compartments can keep scissors, needles, threaders and other tiny supplies from wandering around the bottom of your tote. It’s especially useful if you like taking your needlepoint on vacation, to appointments, or even outside on a pretty afternoon.
Small Valet Trays
This is one of those “not really made for needlepoint, but perfect for needlepoint” finds.
Small collapsible valet trays give you a place beside your stitching chair for thread clippings, scissors, needle threaders and all those tiny things that otherwise end up disappearing into the sofa cushions.
When you’re finished stitching, they fold flat. That makes them especially nice for traveling.
Small Jewelry Bags
Tiny anti-tarnish jewelry bags are surprisingly useful for organizing needlepoint supplies.
Use them to separate threads for different areas of a canvas, hold embellishments and beads, organize extra needles, or keep the little odds and ends belonging to one project together.
You can even prepare individual bags for different projects so you’re ready to grab a canvas and go.
Create Your Own Needlepoint Travel Kit
Put several of these little finds together and you have a wonderful portable stitching kit.
Add your current canvas, threads and a couple of tapestry needles, and you’re ready to stitch almost anywhere.
And here’s the thing: needlepoint is supposed to be enjoyable.
Anything that eliminates frustration, keeps your supplies organized, or simply makes your stitching space prettier gets my vote. Sometimes the smallest accessories make the biggest difference.
So whether you’re stitching at home in your favorite chair or packing a project for your next trip, these are a few of my favorite finds for making needlepoint life just a little easier—and a lot more fun.
Happy stitching,
